Politics Mondays: Mark Your Calendar, May 21, 2005, The Concerned Black Men of Philadelphia Conference

On Saturday May 21, 2005 I have the honor and privilege of serving as guest and panelist at the National Organization Of Concerned Black Men, Inc., Conference. This year's conference theme is "Mentoring the Youth of Today...Creating the Leaders of Tomorrow" and I have been asked to speak on the topic: "Race, Politics, Education and Our Youth---What’s the Black Agenda for the 21st Century?".

Thirty (30) years ago, concern about the plight of Black children in Philadelphia’s toughest neighborhoods pushed five (5) African American police officers to come together and plan after school activities for local youth. Soon, other African American men from around the city joined them in “caring for our youth,”® and thus Concerned Black Men was born. Today, the National Organization of Concerned Black Men provides out-of-school enrichment and prevention programs to African American children from disadvantaged communities throughout the country. Through the work of a nationwide network of volunteers located in 24 U.S. cities, and an experienced and credentialed staff located in Washington, DC, CBM continues to work for an America where every child has a responsible and caring adult in his or her life.

This year CBM marks its 30th year of mentoring children with its 1st National Conference and Youth Gala Awards celebration. This important event will occur from Thursday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22, 2005 at the Sheraton Society Hill, One Dock Street, in Philadelphia, the city where CBM began its work with youth. The conference’s theme “Mentoring the Youth of Today … Creating the Leaders of Tomorrow” underscores CBM’s long history of making a difference in the lives of our Nation’s youth.

We very much would like to have your participation on a panel entitled Race, Politics, Education and Our Youth---What’s the Black Agenda for the 21st Century? This discussion will take place on Saturday, May 21st, from 1:00p-3:30p.

This national event will bring together the country’s leading educators, politicians, community stakeholders, philanthropic-minded celebrities and others to discuss today’s important issues affecting African American children and their families.
