Hip-Hop Fridays: Cynthia McKinney's Webcast Address On Hip-Hop

This Tuesday, June 15th, former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney delivered one of the most significant speeches regarding Hip-Hop, in recent years. Her address entitled, "In Defense Of Cultural Expression, Economic Power and Political Movement", is one of the few talks, in recent memory, that appeals to the broadest cross-segments of Hip-Hip, as a generation, community, and industry. Unlike virtually every other politician, it is clear that Ms. McKinney understands Hip-Hop as a constituency seeking to define itself and leverage and transfer its enormous influence in civil society into the realm of electoral politics.

The near 20-minute address, made via webcast is an almost perfect compliment to the National Hip Hop Political Convention currently taking place in Newark, New Jersey.

This speech and the convention are just two of a growing number of signs that something very powerful is happening at the nexus of culture and politics in Black America and youth culture.
